Al Sedra Early Years

Dear Parents,

As we move towards the end of the academic year, the school is placing a strong emphasis on developing and consolidating students’ transferable skills across all areas of learning. Communication, collaboration, problem solving, creativity, resilience and independence continue to be embedded in daily classroom practice, enabling students to apply their knowledge with increasing confidence and purpose. Across subjects, students are being encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning, reflect on their progress and deepen their understanding through meaningful challenges and opportunities for discussion and enquiry.

In preparation for the final part of the academic year, work across the school is also focused on supporting students for end of year assessments and ensuring smooth transitions into the next stage of learning. There is a continued focus on independence, resilience and effective learning habits, helping students to demonstrate what they know and can do in a variety of contexts. These approaches are designed to strengthen achievement while also supporting personal development, ensuring students are well prepared for the opportunities and expectations that lie ahead.

Yours faithfully,

Pamela Abbas

This week, learning focused on travel and Paddington Bear. The students enjoyed exploring different countries around the world and discussing places they would like to visit. Conversations about holidays and the items needed for a trip helped students develop their communication skills and understanding of the world.

The students had great fun playing the Mystery Box Game, using their sense of touch to identify holiday related items while keeping their eyes closed. This encouraged curiosity, descriptive language and prediction skills. They also enjoyed dressing Paddington Bear for his adventures, choosing suitable clothing and accessories for different destinations.

In phonics, the focus was on revisiting and consolidating previously learned sounds through a range of fun games and interactive activities. The students practised recognising sounds, blending and segmenting words, helping to build their confidence and strengthen their early reading skills. The students should be very proud of their enthusiasm and participation throughout the week.

This week in Reception, the students enjoyed exploring the story Little Red Riding Hood. They listened carefully to the story and discussed the characters, setting and events. They showed great enthusiasm when retelling the story and talking about what happened to Little Red Riding Hood on her journey through the forest. Through role play activities, the students acted out different parts of the story. They also enjoyed making and decorating their own baskets, just like Little Red Riding Hood.

In Maths, the focus was on sharing. Through practical activities and games, the students learned how to share objects equally between groups. They practised counting and discussing whether groups had the same number of objects. The students used a variety of resources to explore equal groups and developed their confidence in explaining their thinking.

This week in IPC, the students have been exploring how artists capture emotions and express feelings through art. They discussed different facial expressions and how these can represent a range of emotions such as happiness, sadness and surprise. The students then created their own repeated pattern using their faces, inspired by Andy Warhol, thinking carefully about colour, expression and design.

In Maths, the focus has been on time, particularly seconds, minutes and hours. The students have been developing their understanding of how long different activities take and how time is measured. They have also been learning about o’clock and half past, practising reading and making times on clocks through hands on activities and games.

In writing, the class is nearing the end of creating their text map. The students have been working hard to sequence ideas clearly and use their knowledge of the story structure to help them retell it confidently. This is supporting them as they prepare to write independently.

In their Dojo challenges, the students enjoyed making seats for the audience. They used a variety of materials and worked collaboratively to design and build their creations, developing their creativity, problem solving and teamwork skills.
