Al Sedra Early Years

Dear Parents,

As we come to the end of another successful half term, it is a good moment to reflect on the progress and energy across the school community. This has been a busy and productive period, with students showing real enthusiasm for their learning and growing confidence across all areas of the curriculum.

Across year groups, there has been strong academic progress alongside creativity and curiosity in lessons. From engaging classroom discussions to high-quality topic work and enrichment opportunities, students have demonstrated focus, resilience, and a positive attitude to learning.

We have also seen continued development in independence and collaboration, with students working well together and taking pride in their achievements. The school has been full of purposeful learning and a strong sense of momentum as we move closer to the end of the year.

As we look ahead, students can return refreshed and ready for the final stage of the year.

Yours faithfully,

Pamela Abbas

This week in Preschool, the students have been learning the phonic sound 'q' for queen. The students have enjoyed practising the sound, recognising the letter, and identifying words that begin with 'q'.

In Literacy, the students have focused on writing their names and identifying and writing initial sounds. The students are becoming increasingly confident with their letter formation and pencil control.

In Maths, the students explored a range of 2D shapes, including squares, triangles, rectangles, and circles. They used these shapes to create patterns and design imaginative pictures.

To support fine motor development, the students have been practising their cutting skills by carefully cutting along straight, wavy, and zig-zag lines. This has helped to strengthen hand control and coordination.

This week in Reception, the students explored the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. They listened carefully to the tale, discussed the different characters, and made predictions about what might be at the top of the beanstalk. Some children imagined a magical castle, while others thought there might be friendly giants, golden treasures, or even a land made of candy.

The students enjoyed a variety of creative activities linked to the story. They painted pictures of the giant and designed their own colourful beanstalks. They also created drawings and wrote about what they imagined Jack might discover above the clouds.

Through these activities, the students practised storytelling, creativity, speaking, and making predictions. It was wonderful to see their imaginations develop as they explored the exciting adventures Jack might have beyond the clouds.

This week in Year 1, the students have been exploring how the circus can capture different emotions. They created their own abstract faces inspired by Pablo Picasso, using colour and shape to show different feelings.

In Maths, they have been learning about numbers to 100 and how they are made up of tens and ones. During challenge provision, the students used dienes to build and represent numbers. They also explored finding one more and one less than numbers to 100, using tens and ones to help them solve the answers confidently.

In English, the students have been working hard to perfect their spelling, punctuation and grammar through lots of practice and revision. They have shown great determination and are becoming much more confident in applying these important skills in their writing.

In Mathematics, they completed their post-assessment on telling the time. It was fantastic to see how much progress the students have made, and many pupils have excelled in this topic.

In IPC, the students continued their Live and Let Live unit by exploring what makes up a healthy and balanced diet. They enjoyed learning about the different food groups and discussing how to make healthy choices.
