Al Sedra Bin Omran

Round up of this week

Head/Deputy Head Message

As we continue in the blessed month of Ramadan, we are reminded of the important values it teaches us—patience, kindness, self-discipline, compassion, and gratitude. At school, we are embracing this special time as an opportunity to guide our children in living these values each day through their words, actions, and learning. Ramadan offers a powerful moment to reflect, show empathy towards others, and strengthen our sense of community, and we are proud to see our students demonstrating respect and care for one another.

With the adjusted school hours, lesson times are significantly shorter, making every minute of learning especially valuable. It can be challenging to maintain consistency and continuity in teaching when students arrive late, as this disrupts the flow of lessons and impacts both their own progress and that of their classmates. We kindly remind all parents that students should be in school from 8:45am until 12:45pm each day. Punctuality ensures that children can fully benefit from the learning opportunities provided and helps us maintain a calm, purposeful environment during this important month.

Thank you for your continued support, and we wish all our families a peaceful and rewarding Ramadan.

Ms. Kim

PreSchool

This week we have been learning about the story Tiddler 🐟🌊. The children enjoyed listening to the story and talking about the different sea creatures.

In Maths, we learned about the concept of more and less. We used sea animals to help us count and compare numbers in a fun way.

We also made different sea creature crafts 🎨🐠🦀 using bright colours and fun materials. The children loved being creative and are very proud of their beautiful underwater artwork! 🌊✨

🌙 Ramadan Mubarak to all our families celebrating.

Reception

This week we have continued our topic, ‘Imagine That’. We have been learning about the artist Pablo Picasso and looking at his colourful and unusual portraits. The children enjoyed talking about what they could see in his artwork.

The children then created their own pictures inspired by Picasso. They used bold shapes and strong lines to design their faces. They worked hard, showed confidence and felt very proud of their finished artwork.

In Literacy, the children wrote about Picasso and their own pictures. They described what they could see and talked about the different shapes, colours and ideas they used.

In Maths, we have been learning about number bonds to 10. The children have been practising different ways to make 10 and are becoming more confident in remembering these number facts.

Well done to everyone for a great week of learning!

Year 1

What an exciting week we have had in Year 1! 🌟

In Maths, we have been exploring lengths and heights, comparing objects and using mathematical vocabulary such as taller, shorter, longer and shorter. The children enjoyed measuring and investigating different items around the classroom!

In Literacy, we have continued working on our poem, focusing on how it rhymes and thinking creatively about new ideas we could add. The children have been fantastic at spotting rhyming words and inventing their own imaginative lines! 🐊✨

In Science, we explored trees and wild garden flowers, learning about their different parts and how they grow. The children loved identifying features and discussing what plants need to survive. 🌳🌼

In IPC, we learned all about a crocodile’s habitat, linking beautifully to our literacy work. We discussed where crocodiles live, what they need to survive, and how their habitat helps them. The children were very enthusiastic and made excellent connections across subjects!

It has been a busy, fun-filled week of learning — we are so proud of all their hard work! 🌟

Year 2

This week in Year 2 🌍✨

In Maths, we used the × symbol and pictorial representations to help us identify and understand multiplication number sentences ➕✖️. We also explored arrays, using key vocabulary such as rows and columns to help us see what different times table number sentences look like.

In Literacy, we began the innovation stage of our poem The Little Turtle. The children changed the animal to create their own versions - we had some amazing ideas including monkeys 🐒, flamingos 🦩, penguins 🐧 and elephants 🐘!

In IPC, we launched our new topic, The Earth, Our Home 🌎. The children explored how Earth is a habitat for many different species and animal groups, helping them understand how important our planet is.

To celebrate the commencement of Ramadan, we created beautiful lanterns 🏮, decorated our classroom and designed a special display sharing what we are grateful for.

Another fantastic and meaningful week of learning in Year 2!

Year 3

This week in IPC, we explored rainforest animals. The children read descriptions and matched them to pictures, building comprehension. We also learned what endangered means and discussed ways we can help protect the environment.

In Maths, we finalised our fractions topic by exploring different fraction models and learning how to make fractions equivalent. The children used practical resources and diagrams to deepen their understanding and confidence overall.

In Literacy, we continued writing about our magic box poems, focusing on imitating the model and learning features of a poem. The children used imaginative ideas and descriptive language to create their versions.

Year 4

It has been an action-packed week for Year 4, filled with poetic nonsense, mathematical breakthroughs, and historical discoveries! ✨

English: Nonsense and Performance 🎭

In Reading, the children have been exploring various poetic styles, most recently diving into the wonderful world of Spike Milligan. We had a fantastic time reading 'On the Ning Nang Nong'; its clever use of nonsense words provided plenty of laughs and helped the pupils understand how rhythm and sound can bring a poem to life. 🤪

In Writing, we focused on 'short burst' sessions to sharpen our use of similes. The week culminated in a collaborative effort as the children worked in groups to perform our model poem, showing great confidence and expression! 🎤🌟

Mathematics: Fractions in Action 🔢

The classroom has been buzzing with numbers as we deepened our understanding of fractions. The children have been working hard on:

  • Converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions. 🔄
  • Exploring equivalent fraction families. 🤝

Science: Sparking Curiosity

Our Science lessons have been truly electrifying! The children have begun investigating electrical circuits, identifying various components and learning how they function together to create a working loop. 🔋💡

IPC: All Aboard! 🌍

As part of our 'All Aboard' topic, we have been looking at the global impact of the railways. We discovered a fascinating fact: did you know that the expansion of the railways was responsible for the introduction of standardised time zones? Before the trains, different towns often kept their own local time! 🕒🚉

Year 5

This week in IPC, we have been exploring different biomes. We used the Ipads and carried out research on different biomes around the globe:

  • Desert
  • Rainforest
  • Grassland
  • Tundra (Arctic)
  • Taiga (Boreal Forest)
  • Ocean (Marine)

We then created posters about them, exploring which animals and plants live there, what is the climate like and the effect humans have on it.

Year 6

This week in English, the children have been exploring the first and second stanzas of the poem If. They have worked hard to understand the deeper meaning of the poem and have practised rewriting parts of it in modern English to demonstrate their understanding. In Maths, we completed our unit on algebra and have now begun our new unit on decimals, focusing on place value within 1 and developing our understanding of place value and integers. In IPC, the children took on the role of historians as they investigated who was responsible for the sinking of the Titanic. They examined a range of historical evidence and formed their own conclusions about who was to blame, justifying their opinions carefully. In Science, we explored the concept of refraction through simple experiments and learned that light travels at different speeds through different materials. In PHSE, we have been discussing what makes a good friend and identifying the positive traits that help build strong and healthy friendships.
