Al Sedra Bin Omran

Deputy Head

This week, we have seen a noticeable improvement in attendance, which is fantastic. It has been wonderful to see so many more students accessing their learning consistently and making the most of their time in school. Across the classrooms, there have been some excellent examples of writing, alongside confident and expressive performance reading in Literacy. In Science, learning has been very hands-on, with pupils fully engaged in a range of exciting experiments.

Miss Kim

Pre School

Our topic is “People Who Help Us” 👩‍⚕️👨‍🌾👮‍♂️. We are learning about different occupations and exploring how each job plays an important role in our community 🌍. We are discovering how people’s work helps keep our world safe, healthy, and running smoothly every day.

We focused especially on zoo veterinarians 🩺🐾 and zookeepers 🐒🦒. We learned that zoo vets care for animals by treating illnesses and injuries, while zookeepers feed the animals, clean their homes, and make sure they are healthy and happy. These important jobs help protect animals and support conservation efforts 🐘🌿.

We also connected our learning to Maths 🔢📐, exploring patterns, shapes, size, and number recognition. We noticed patterns in animal markings 🐆, compared the sizes of different animals 📏, identified shapes in enclosures and habitats 🔷🔺⚪, and practised recognising numbers when counting animals and food portions 🐟🐟🐟.

Overall, we learned the importance of different occupations and how every job contributes something valuable to our community ❤️👏.

Reception

This week in Reception, the children have continued exploring our exciting topic ‘To the Rescue’, with a special focus on worms and different minibeasts. They have shown great interest as they discovered fascinating facts about these tiny creatures and their important role in the world around us.

In Literacy, the children have been busy writing their own fact files all about worms. They showed great enthusiasm as they used their phonics to help them write facts and form simple sentences about what they have learned.

In Maths, the focus has been on developing spatial awareness. Through practical activities, the children explored position, direction and how objects relate to one another in space, helping them to understand where things are and how they move.

The children made their own worms using colourful wool and used their handprints to create different parts of minibeasts. They also explored a variety of other creative activities, confidently sharing their ideas and experimenting with different materials.

It has been a wonderful week full of exploration, creativity and fun!

Year 1

What a fantastic week of learning we have had in Year 1! 😊

🔢 Maths – We have been learning about money and exploring the value of 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p and 20p coins 💰. The children enjoyed recognising the coins, comparing their values, and using them to make different amounts!

📚 Literacy – We started an exciting new book called Lucy and Tom at the Seaside 🏖️. The children have loved exploring the story and discussing the seaside adventures of the characters.

🌦️ IPC – In our topic lesson, we investigated weather and learned how one place can experience different types of weather at different times! The children were fascinated by how weather changes around the world ☀️🌧️🌬️.

🦁 Science – We have begun learning about omnivores 🐻🍎🥩 and discovered that these animals eat both plants and meat! The children enjoyed identifying different omnivores and discussing their diets.

Year 2

This week in Year 2 🌟

In Maths, the children continued their learning on fractions ➗. They recognised three quarters, found three quarters of given amounts and practised counting up in fractions to make a whole, using practical resources to support their understanding.

In Literacy, the children completed their Hot Write ✏️, writing their own problem and resolution tales about missing special toys. They worked hard to apply everything they had learnt, including story structure, descriptive language and clear sequencing.

In IPC, as part of our topic From A to B 🚶‍♂️, the children focused on following routes and directions. They practised giving and following simple instructions such as left, right, forward and backward, helping them successfully navigate from one place to another around the school.

Another fantastic week of learning in Year 2! ✨

Year 3

Year 3 have written fantastic final speeches this week as part of their independent writing. It was brilliant to see them confidently apply all the skills we have been developing this term, including using conjunctions, time connectives, and clear paragraphing to organise their ideas. The children also worked hard to include evidence to support their points, making their writing more persuasive and structured. They showed great pride in their work and really impressed us with their progress.

In Guided Reading, we began a new text, The Worst Witch, which the children have thoroughly enjoyed so far. They have been focusing on using evidence to support their answers through the “point and explain” approach, helping them to deepen their understanding of the text and improve their comprehension skills.

In Maths, we finalised our topic on time. The children showed great resilience and determination, especially when tackling more challenging concepts such as reading time to the minute and solving time problems. We are very proud of their efforts—please continue to practise telling the time at home to build their confidence further.

Year 4

It has been another industrious and engaging week for Year 4, with the children diving into new concepts across all areas of the curriculum.

Literacy

In Literacy, we have embarked on an enchanting new unit focused on 'Losing Stories'. Using Carol Ann Duffy’s The Lost Happy Endings as our inspiration, the children have been exploring how to weave emotion and humour into their narratives. This week, we have specifically focused on using personification and similes to bring our descriptions to life and help the reader truly connect with the characters' feelings.

Mathematics

Our exploration of Time continued this week as we expanded our knowledge to include the 24-hour clock. The children have been working hard to convert between analogue times and the 24-hour digital format. We discussed how essential this skill is in the real world, particularly when reading flight or train timetables to ensure we never miss a journey!

Science

The classroom has been full of interesting sounds as we delved into the world of Pitch. The children investigated the distinct difference between pitch and volume, conducting experiments with elastic bands to demonstrate how changing the tension and length can alter the pitch of a sound.

IPC: Houses and Homes

In our International Primary Curriculum unit, 'Houses and Homes', we have moved our focus toward global responsibility and human rights. The children have been thoughtfully discussing the fundamental principle that every child, regardless of where they are in the world, has the right to a safe and secure home.

Year 5

In Science, we investigated air resistance by making and testing paper airplanes. Air resistance is a force that slows objects down as they move through the air. We created different designs and flew them from the same height to see which travelled the best. We found that wider wings helped planes stay in the air longer, while slimmer designs moved faster with less air resistance. This showed that the best design needs a balance between lift and air resistance.

Year 6

This week has been a busy and engaging one in Year 6. In Maths, we continued our work on angles, exploring angles in quadrilaterals, solving missing angles, and looking at angles within different polygons. We also began learning about circles and their key features, including the circumference, diameter, and radius. In English, we continued developing our persuasive writing skills, focusing on how to include quotes using inverted commas, dashes, and semi-colons. The children have also been completing short writing tasks to practise and refine these skills.

In IPC, we carried out a case study on climate change, exploring how flooding is increasingly affecting Bangladesh. The children read real-life accounts of how people’s lives have been impacted and then wrote powerful letters from the perspective of a Bangladeshi child experiencing the floods. We were also introduced to a new learning platform, Century Tech, where the children logged in and completed diagnostic assessments. This platform will be a valuable resource to support learning at home. In Guided Reading, we completed a comprehension on Pompeii, learning about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and answering a range of questions about the disaster. In Science, we looked in more detail at how the heart initiates the flow of blood and supports the circulatory system. Overall, it has been a productive and enriching week of learning.
