Al Sedra Early Years

Dear Parents,

As we move towards the end of the academic year, excitement is building across the school as students prepare for our End of Year Celebration Assemblies. These events are a wonderful opportunity for our children to showcase their talents, confidence, and creativity through a range of performances that they have been working hard to perfect.

Classrooms and shared spaces are filled with music, rehearsals, and enthusiastic practice as students prepare songs, dances, dramatic pieces, and presentations for family and friends. The assemblies are designed to celebrate not only what students have learned this year, but also their growing confidence and ability to perform in front of an audience.

We look forward to welcoming parents to these special occasions and sharing the joy and pride that our students feel as they take to the stage. Thank you for your ongoing support, encouragement, and partnership throughout the year. Together, we will celebrate a memorable conclusion to another successful school year.

Yours faithfully,

Pamela Abbas

This week in Preschool, the students have continued their transition activities in preparation for moving into Reception. We talked about how they might feel about this exciting change and discussed what they may miss about Preschool.

In phonics, we revisited previously taught sounds and practised blending and segmenting through a range of fun games and puzzles. The students worked collaboratively to solve challenges, further developing their early reading and spelling skills.

In Maths, we focused on sorting and grouping objects according to different criteria, such as colour, shape and size. The students explored similarities and differences while developing their mathematical language and reasoning skills.

To support gross motor development, the students took part in a creative colouring activity underneath tables with large sheets of paper attached. Reaching, stretching and colouring from different positions helped to strengthen their upper bodies, improve coordination and develop control, all of which support future writing skills.

This week in Reception, we have been exploring the classic tale of The Ugly Duckling. The students discussed the main events and worked together to sequence the story. They showed great confidence in recalling what happened, from the duckling’s early struggles through to his beautiful transformation into a swan.

Building on the story, we learnt about the life cycle of a duck. The students explored each stage, from egg to duckling to adult duck, and discussed how animals grow and change over time.

In Art, the students used a range of techniques to create their own ‘Ugly Duckling’ characters. They experimented with different materials, including paint, collage, tissue paper and drawing tools. Each creation was unique and reflected the students’ creativity and imagination.

To finish the week, the students created “Wanted” posters to help find the missing duckling. They included drawings, descriptive adjectives and simple sentences explaining what he looked like and where he might be found.

This week in IPC, the students have been critiquing different pieces of artwork and sharing their likes and dislikes, giving thoughtful reasons for their opinions. In Maths, we have been learning about money, with a focus on Qatari Riyals. The students thoroughly enjoyed visiting their class shops and using their knowledge in a practical context, recognising notes and working out simple totals. In Writing, we have completed the final practice writing linked to our text map, demonstrating the skills we have developed over the unit. The students have shown increasing confidence in applying their ideas independently and taking pride in their work.

This week, we are incredibly proud of the hard work, determination and resilience the students have shown. They have completed their Maths and Writing assessments, as well as their Arabic exams, with a fantastic attitude and have given their very best effort throughout.

We also held a special assembly focused on transitioning into Year 3. The students had the opportunity to meet teachers from the Junior School, ask questions and learn more about what to expect next year. It was wonderful to see their excitement and curiosity as they begin to prepare for this important step in their learning journey.

Over the coming weeks, the students will continue to enjoy a rich and engaging range of learning experiences, alongside opportunities to relax, spend time with their friends and celebrate their achievements as the academic year draws to a close. We are looking forward to making the most of our final weeks together and creating many more happy memories.
