Al Sedra Early Years

Dear Parents,

Our school is excited to celebrate Book Week with a magical journey into the world of Alice in Wonderland! Throughout the week, students will explore the wonders of reading through creative activities inspired by this timeless story.

A highlight of the week will be our dressing-up day, where students are encouraged to come as their favourite characters. From curious Alices to mischievous Cheshire Cats, we can’t wait to see the imaginative costumes on display. Please note that football kits are not permitted, as we want to keep our focus on book-inspired characters.

The celebrations will culminate on Thursday 23rd April with a delightful Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. Students will enjoy a fun-filled afternoon with themed treats, storytelling, and games that bring the story to life.

Book Week is a wonderful opportunity to inspire a love of reading, spark creativity, and celebrate the joy of books together as a school community.

We greatly value the partnership and support of parents in helping make this event a memorable and enriching experience for all students.

Yours faithfully,

Pamela Abbas

This week in preschool, our learning focused on transport on the water. The students enjoyed making their own paper boats and testing them in a fun water race, exploring which designs floated the best. In phonics, we introduced the sound ‘j’, practising it through songs, actions, and identifying words like ‘jam’ and ‘jelly’.

Our sensory touch tray activity involved searching for hidden ‘jewels’, encouraging curiosity and language development as the students described what they found. In maths, we used Numicon pieces to build and compare different boats, supporting early counting and problem solving skills.

To develop fine motor skills, the students practised threading, carefully guiding materials to create patterns and strengthen hand-eye control. It has been a busy and engaging week full of creativity, exploration, and hands-on learning. We are very proud of everyone’s enthusiasm and participation.

This exciting topic allows students to learn through play, exploration and collaboration, making learning both fun and meaningful.

Our new topic is Traditional Tales. This week, the students began learning the traditional tale The Gingerbread Man. They explored the story of the mischievous gingerbread man who escapes from the oven and runs away, chanting, ‘Run, run, as fast as you can!’ The students discussed the characters he meets along the way, including the old couple, the animals, and the cunning fox. Through storytelling, role play, and sequencing activities, they practised retelling the tale in their own words. The students enjoyed creating gingerbread crafts and baking their own gingerbread biscuits.

In maths, the students focused on building and representing numbers 11, 12, and 13. Using loose objects such as counters, blocks, and buttons, they practised counting carefully and making each number in different ways. The students explored how these numbers are made up of ten and some more, helping them to develop a stronger understanding of number formation and place value. They also enjoyed comparing the numbers and talking about which is bigger.

This week, Year 1 have been busy with lots of exciting learning across the curriculum. In maths, the students have been learning how to make doubles and write doubling number sentences, using objects and numbers to help them understand. In our topic work, ‘Earth Our Home’, the students enjoyed a creative activity where they made and decorated their own Earths. In IPC, the students explored animal groups, identifying whether animals are carnivores, herbivores or omnivores, and confidently explained how they knew using their understanding of what animals eat.

It has been a busy and engaging week in Year 2!

In maths, we consolidated our learning on fractions, focusing on quarters and thirds. The students developed their confidence by sharing into equal groups of three and deepening their understanding of how parts make a whole.

In English, we began the exciting innovation stage of our text maps. Using their own imaginative character and setting descriptions, the students started to adapt and bring their ideas to life, showing great creativity and enthusiasm in their storytelling.

In IPC, we took part in a fun and engaging group quiz to assess our understanding of our Senses topic. The students worked brilliantly in teams, demonstrating excellent knowledge and collaboration skills.
