Year 3 have had a wonderful holiday and are delighted to be back at school for Term 2. This term, we have begun exploring non-chronological reports in writing, focusing on the fascinating topic of giants. In mathematics, the children have been busy being little mathematicians, confidently solving multiplication and division problems. Year 3 have already impressed us as young scientists by learning about fossils. We have also launched an exciting new IPC topic, Active Planet. It has been a fantastic start to the term, and we can’t wait to see what the rest of it brings.

Year 6 had an amazing first week back after the winter break and have returned to school with a positive and mature attitude. They have settled quickly back into routines and have shown that they are ready for the challenges of the new term. In science, the children kicked off their new topic on light with a fantastic practical lesson. Using torches and mirrors, they carried out experiments to explore how light travels and reflects. Pupils worked collaboratively to test their ideas, make predictions, and discuss their results. There was a real buzz of excitement in the classroom, and it was great to see children using scientific vocabulary confidently while sharing their observations. Writing also got off to a strong start with an engaging hook lesson. The children explored the emotions of different characters using freeze frames and role play. In small groups, they acted out a range of scenarios while the rest of the class tried to guess what was happening and how the characters were feeling. This activity encouraged thoughtful discussion and helped pupils consider how emotions can be shown through body language and facial expression, preparing them well for their upcoming writing. For IPC, the children started with a fun scavenger hunt. The children worked together to find out key information about the Mayans, the Islamic Era, and the Benin civilisation, which links to our history learning this term as we explore the world around 900 AD. Alongside this, Year 6 has shown a strong work ethic across the curriculum. In lessons, they have demonstrated good listening skills, independence, and a willingness to challenge themselves. They have worked well together, supporting one another and taking pride in their learning. Although the weather outside has been rather chilly, the attitude of Year 6 has brought a real warmth to the corridor. Their enthusiasm, positivity, and determination have made the first week back a pleasure and set a great tone for the weeks ahead. Well done to Year 6 on a brilliant first week back. We are confident this will be a successful and enjoyable term for everyone.

Year 5 have made a fantastic start to their first week back after the Winter Break, diving straight into exciting new learning! In Writing, they are studying Balanced Arguments through the Talk for Writing approach, using story maps to explore structure and spotting key golden threads like formal language, cohesive devices, and well-organised paragraphs. In Maths, they have been sharpening their reasoning skills through Division, tackling increasingly challenging problems. In IPC, the children are exploring Endangered, Extinct and Existing Animals, discussing conservation and our responsibility to the planet, while in Science they have begun studying the different stages of the human life cycle, learning how humans grow and change over time. It’s been a purposeful and engaging week, with Year 5 settling back into routines brilliantly and showing real enthusiasm for their new topics.
